What Candidates ACTUALLY Want From Community Tours & Second Look Visits
(Hint: It’s Not Just the Hospital Tour and Free Dinner)
If you’re a program leader, recruiter, or physician considering a move, let’s talk about something that doesn’t get said out loud enough:
Community tours and second look visits can either feel like a warm invitation into a future life… or like a very polite field trip.
And if you’re a physician moving to Indianapolis, matched in Indianapolis, or considering a residency in Indianapolis, those visits are often the moment when the decision becomes real and when spreadsheets turn into gut feelings.
After years of working alongside residents, fellows, attendings, and their partners (and spending more hours than I can count talking with physician spouses on forums, blogs, and group chats), I can tell you this with confidence:
The things candidates care about most are often not the things being highlighted.
Let’s pull back the curtain a bit.
First, Let’s Set the Scene
When candidates come for a second look or community tour, they’re not just evaluating a job.
They’re asking themselves:
- Can I build a life here?
- Will my partner be okay here?
- Will I feel like myself here?
- How will I be supported when medicine gets hard?
And those questions are rarely answered by PowerPoints.
What Candidates ACTUALLY Want (But Rarely Say Out Loud)
- They Want to See Real Life — Not the Highlight Reel
Candidates don’t just want to see the nicest neighborhood or the newest development.
They want context.
They want to understand:
- Where people actually live on their salary
- What a typical Saturday looks like
- What kind of community groups are available to them
- What are their options for childcare
- Where residents grab coffee post-call
- Which neighborhoods feel welcoming vs. transactional
This is especially true for those who matched in Indianapolis who may be moving from much larger or much smaller cities, with very little context of what to expect from Life in Indy.
They’re trying to picture their daily rhythm, not just their commute.
Programs that show a range of lifestyle options build far more trust than those that only show the “shiniest” spots.
- They’re Evaluating How Their Partner Will Fit — Even If They Came Alone
This is one of the biggest themes across physician spouse communities like MedCommons.
Candidates are constantly evaluating:
👉 “Will my partner build a life here… or will they feel like they sacrificed theirs?”
They want to know:
- Career opportunities for spouses
- Social communities
- Things to do outside medicine
- Whether partners actually feel welcomed in program and system events
- What is the groups commitment to making sure spouses and families are also cared for an included
The programs that win top candidates talk about partner integration openly ,not as an afterthought.
- They Want Transparency About Cost of Living (Not Just “It’s Affordable”)
Physicians are analytical — and communities like White Coat Investor have made them even more financially savvy.
When someone is considering a physician job in Indianapolis or a residency in Indianapolis, they don’t just want to hear that housing is affordable.
They want specifics:
- Typical rent ranges
- What residents actually pay for housing
- Commute tradeoffs
- Buying vs renting realities
Programs that provide real numbers instantly build credibility, and ensure candidates that they won’t be left to figure the housing piece out on their own.
- They’re Looking for REAL signs of community , not just amenities
Amenities are nice.
But belonging is everything.
Candidates are watching for subtle cues:
- Do residents hang out outside work?
- Is there a culture of inclusion?
- Do people seem genuinely happy?
- They Want to Talk to People Who Will Tell Them the Truth
This might be the most important one.
Candidates crave honest conversations with:
- Current residents
- Recent graduates
- Spouses of colleagues
- Future Colleagues at a similar stage of their careers
- People who moved from similar cities
Not scripted answers, real ones.
The programs/groups that create space for authentic conversations, outside the earshot of departmental or program leadership, build the deepest trust.
What This Means for Recruitment Strategy
If you’re a recruiter or program leader, here’s the shift:
Community tours should feel less like a presentation… and more like an invitation into real life.
Because the decision to move isn’t just logical, it’s deeply emotional.
And when candidates feel seen as whole humans with full lives and families, it creates a sense of connection. They feel like a commodity at most of their interviews…make them feel like a human that you truly see and care for.
For those moving to Indianapolis for residency or considering a physician role here, the opportunity is huge.
Indianapolis offers something rare. Transplants call it a “sticky city” for a reason. You get here, possibly with low expectations, and quickly realize why people end up staying.
But candidates need help seeing that , not just hearing it.
And when they get to REALLY experience Indy (not just the curated route, straight shot to Carmel version) Indy becomes incredibly compelling.
