CONSIDERATIONS FOR RELOCATING TO INDIANAPOLIS FOR MEDICAL RESIDENCY OR FELLOWSHIP
Each year we have medical students who find us on social platforms or somehow digitally. Usually they’re either students at one of the two medical schools in Indy OR more likely are considering a Residency or Fellowship program in Indy. So we have a ton of conversations about relocating to Indy for training , we conduct second look visits, and we generally champion the city of Indianapolis. We always want to provide both sides of the coin when it comes to any viewpoints we provide. Of course, you’ll hear mostly about the benefits of the program you’re considering…but we like for you to consider where you’ll live, work, and play as well! So here are some considerations for relocating to Indianapolis for Medical Residency or Fellowship:
- Cost of Living – The cost of living in Indianapolis is relatively affordable compared to many major U.S. cities. Housing costs are lower than the national average, with both renting and buying options being more budget-friendly. Utilities, groceries, and transportation expenses also tend to be moderate, making it an attractive option for those looking for a lower-cost lifestyle. Overall, the city offers a good balance of affordable living and urban amenities.
- Urban or Rural Environment Availability-Indianapolis offers a blend of urban and suburban environments, with a bustling city center and quieter, more residential neighborhoods surrounding it. The downtown area features a vibrant mix of businesses, entertainment, and cultural attractions, while the suburbs offer a more peaceful, rural-like atmosphere with easy access to green spaces. Additionally, nearby rural areas provide quick escapes from the city for those seeking a more tranquil, nature-filled lifestyle. This mix allows residents to enjoy the best of both worlds, whether they prefer the energy of the city or the calm of the countryside.
- Are you looking for a BIG “big city”- While Indy does have a “bustling” city center and a lot of urban spaces, if you’re hoping for a BIG BIG city you may consider visiting indy to get a feel for the difference. Many hoosiers describe Indianapolis as a BIG little town, mostly because it combines the amenities and opportunities of a major city with a tight-knit, friendly atmosphere that makes it feel more intimate and approachable. But if you LOVE the big city lights and a very fast paced environment consistently, you may consider other options.
- “On the Water”? Yes…sort of. Indianapolis is one of the only major cities without a navigable waterway, but we do have plenty of scenic water views. Between Eagle Creek, Geist, White River, Turkey Run, you can find your outdoor water views nearby and connect with nature if you know the right spot.
- Community Building Opportunities – This is one of those two sided coins. Indianapolis has a strong network of affinity groups that foster community building among various social, cultural, and professional groups. The city is home to organizations that support diverse communities, including LGBTQ+, racial/ethnic minorities, women, medspouses, and religious groups, offering spaces for connection and advocacy. Local events, networking meetups, and cultural festivals provide opportunities for people to engage with others who share common interests or backgrounds. The other side of this coin is that you do generally have to hear about several opportunities to connect via word of mouth to really plug into the groups that fit your needs. Having some sort of “community liaison” to help you navigate this can be super helpful and get you acclimated more quickly.
